Matthew 21:1-11 Luke 19:29-44
Allow me to set the stage for this holy week ~ It was the festival of the Passover and two powerful figures were en route to Jerusalem, a city in turmoil. Entering from the west was Pilot who was flanked by armed military guards. While across town in the opposite direction, the humble shepherds King Jesus began making his entrance.
Scripture tells us he had sent two of his disciples ahead to retrieve a colt, the foal of a donkey. This young spirited animal had never been ridden. Just imagine riding an untrained creature; but it became quite evident Jesus and the colt had become as one as they rode through the streets of Jerusalem.
The crowd celebrated his arrival by waving palm branches, even using them to pave the road. Many threw down their garments to offer their approval, worship, and praise. They were celebrating the King. “Glory to God in the highest” ~ “Hosanna (save us) to the King.”
But as the week progressed, the scene changed. ENTER: Pharisees continued to challenge the authority of Jesus. A somber mood crept into place and life began to look rather bleak and hopeless because the religious leaders thought Jesus was a fraud. Betrayal became inevitable for Jesus due in part to apostle, Judas Iscariot’s deal with the Pharisees.
Jesus was beaten unmercifully and crucified; but three days later, our Savior came forth from the grave the victor, to live forever, and we are invited to be with Him and have eternal life. All we have to do is acknowledge that we are sinners, ask for forgiveness, and invite Him into our hearts.
Hallelujah! He is risen! He lives and reigns forever. His plan of salvation has been completed. It is finished! Fait accompli!
PRAYER ~ We offer you our praise and thanksgiving, HEAVENLY FATHER, for giving your life so that we may live.
